The Faim // INTERVIEW Our deputy music editor, Sophia McDonald, speaks to The Faim.

After the success of ‘Summer is a Curse’, Australian band The Faim set their sights on Europe. This summer, they took Reading and Leeds by storm and played The Academy in Dublin at the end of August. Their debut album State of Mind was released on the 13th of September and features tracks such as ‘Amelie’ and ‘Humans’. Taking time from their busy schedule to talk to our deputy music editor, Sophia McDonald, The Faim offer insights into their debut album, tour life and dream collaborations.

Your debut album is set for release this autumn; what was the recording process like?

We learned a lot, not just about ourselves but about the industry, each other, and how all four of us write music together. We’re excited to get started on album number 2.

And can you tell us more about the album?

The album has been in the works for around a year and a half. Some of the songs have been around for a while, some are really new. It’s a little acknowledgement to the past, but also an insight into the future of The Faim’s sound.

What would you say influenced the new album?

The amalgamation of our different musical influences. We all come from very different musical backgrounds and that’s definitely shaped the album.

And what did you learn from the album recording process?

It gave us a huge sense of perspective. Time was of the essence with the recording process and because of tight deadlines it was important to get things done quickly, which we did.

What’s your favourite part about touring?

Visiting new places and exploring parts of the world we otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to see. Also having the opportunity to play music for people who support us on the other side of the world is pretty cool too.

This is your biggest tour yet, what are you most looking forward to?

Definitely the festivals. Not only are there plenty of festivals in countries we don’t get to perform in too often, but we’re also on the same line-up as some of our favourite bands who have shaped our teenage years.

Where would be the dream place to play for you guys?

We’d love to tour Japan one day. None of us have been before and we’d be super keen to tour there and experience the Japanese culture. We’ve heard nothing but good things about it. It’s an exciting thought to perform and have no idea what the reaction might be.

What’s your favourite song to play at a show?

Tongue Tied. It’s a new one. It’s fast, it’s heavy and it’s a whole lot of fun. It seems to be getting a great reaction from the crowds who’ve heard the song so far, which is encouraging.

Finally, who would you most love to collaborate with?

Josh Homme. That guy is a lord, his songwriting is incredible and his perspective towards music in general is something I’d love to wrap my head around.
