Four big films to note in October:

September headlines were dominated by two highly anticipated TV series coming to our screens in the form of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, and Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power. House of the Dragon has received some excellent reviews, whilst Rings of Power has led to a mix of critical feedback. We will all certainly continue talking about these two throughout the month of October, although there are some fascinating film releases in the very near future which will be sure to gain some attention if they haven’t already. Let’s look ahead…

Amsterdam:

Amsterdam is set to be released in Irish theatres on October 7th . The film was written and directed by David O. Russell. Russell has five academy award nominations to his name, and he looks set to receive more critical acclaim with his latest project. Amsterdam rekindles the previously successful partnership he had with Christian Bale in The Fighter and American Hustle. Margot Robbie and John David Washington complete a very star-studded trio of actors. The film is set in the 1930’s and follows the three stars as they become prime suspects in a murder case. It is unknown exactly how much of the film will be based on true events, but a very enticing trailer has been released with a quote stating, ‘A lot of this actually happened’. We can expect a lot of talk around this film when it hits screens and I suspect we shall not be let down.

The Banshee of Inisherin:

The Banshee of Inisherin is massive news for Irish cinema. The film was shot off the coast of Ireland on the island of Inishmore. Martin McDonagh has done so much for the Irish industry, and this is one of his biggest projects yet. He is once again teaming up with Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, who were such a great comedic duo in In Bruges. The film is a real nod to the most remote parts of Ireland. Set on the fictional island of Inisherin, Padraic (Farrell) incredulously comes to terms with the fact that Colm (Gleeson) has decided he no longer wants to be friends. Padraic is somewhat devastated with the news and desperately attempts to find reasoning. Colm continues to reject Padraic’s attempts, leading to more confusion and controversy. The premise is fascinating and I’m sure we all cannot wait to find some answers on October 21st . It is also remarkable to see that Barry Keoghan will be appearing in yet another major film. His career seems to be strengthening by the day.

My Policeman:

My Policeman will be hitting theatres on October 21st before its Amazon Prime Video premiere in November. The film stars Harry Styles who has burst onto the film scene, also starring in Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling. Unsurprisingly, Harry is not everyone’s cup of tea, but he deserves credit for taking on such complex roles. Directed by Michael Grandage, My Policeman follows the life of Tom Burgess (Styles), who is engaged in a relationship with Marion (Emma Burgess) in 1950’s England. Tom and Marion are soon introduced to Patrick (David Dawson) who changes everything as he encourages Tom to explore his sexuality. Patrick’s introduction leads to a dramatic love triangle in which Tom has to navigate his feelings and morals. The film also features jumps into the future, as acted by Linus Roache, Gina McKee, and Rupert Everett.

All Quiet on the Western Front:

Finally, All Quiet on the Western Front will be released on October 14th . The film will also be available to stream via Netflix. German director Edward Berger tells the story of a German soldier’s encounters on the western battle front during World War I. Felix Kammerer and Daniel Brühl star in this film based on the 1929 book, ‘Im Westen nichts Neues‘. The book has been adapted as a film twice previously, once in 1930 and again in 1979. The film will give a fascinating perspective from the losing side of the war. The protagonists see their initial boyish patriotism turn to dust as they are faced with the horrors of war. The film will feature some intense trench warfare and if you are a fan of war films, this is definitely one to keep an eye out for.
