5 Questions with a Fine Art Student: Rory Malone

Rory Malone is currently in his first year of studying Fine Art in IADT.

Why did you choose to study Fine Art?

I picked fine art because it is what I am best at besides music. It seemed like it would be more fun in college and there are more jobs available for an artist.

What mediums do you like to work with and what themes do you like to explore?

I am interested in capturing an emotion or the essence of a face in a simple watercolour sketch or continuous pen line drawing, These drawings take less than 2 minutes. So that theme would be the abstract human face I guess.

What has been the best thing about studying art, so far?

The best thing that has happened to me while studying art is being able to devote my attention to large, long term art projects. During school time a piece would consume an evening max, now I can work on a project that may be finished in 2-6 weeks. This allows me to completely engage with the project and I often find myself writing down random ideas that pop into my head during the day or in bed that can contribute to the project.

Professionally, what is your goal?

My goal professionally is to be able to sustain a living on producing my 3D work for exhibitions and large commissions.

What piece of work are you proudest of?

My favourite piece I have done is a small orange watercolour sketch of a woman’s face with a broken nose. Even though it took around 60 seconds to make and is only the size of a postage stamp I still love the spontaneity of it and how the lines become more aggressive and prominent around the broken nose.
