Thursday Cafe

The Thursday Cafe is nestled in the heart of the Coombe on Clanbrassil Street. Sitting in the oddly organised patchwork setup, it can feel a little like an old country kitchen, with disparate cutlery and wooden chairs. The mid-sized space is a happy break to the passing traffic, but making the trip out also means a dip into Dublin 8, a lively flowering of markets and independent openings. The friendly staff and comfortable setup are perfect for studying, and the vicinity not without distraction when that fails.

The Thursday Cafe is ideal: serving all tastes without the exclusivity of a vegan-only menu, anyone can enjoy this place. Half of the menu is vegan and the rest almost wholly vegetarian. Breakfast and lunch favourites are dished without compromising their individual flavour. Full of organic vegetables with meat as a optional garnish, veganism is easily facilitated. Dishes like the Mexican tortilla breakfast, quiche and a vegan soup of the day are hearty honest options, part of normalising people’s environmental and ethical choices. And we can’t imagine brunch without Avocado on Toast. A sweeter tooth might like the motley of pastries and cakes that are available, like banana bread and flapjacks.

Chatting to the barista, I learnt how much of the food is locally and organically sourced. Lovers of Baobab Coffee and Lilliputs might spot some things on the menu, and the vegetables are from the organic farm Beechlawn in Galway. With such a vegetable-heavy focus, the menu has flipped the typical demoralising script of picking the only vegan option available — proof in itself that there are more ways to cook. They have breakfast, lunch and pizza, all meals that the average student needs. My last visit was too early to even make an attempt at ordering one of the pizzas (there is a vegan option, of course!) but the all-veg menu was quite inviting. Instead I spent a morning with tea and carrot cake, sipping eating stopping, sipping eating stopping, sipping eating reading.
