Trends for Spring-Summer

WORDS Issy Thompson

1/ Pleats

The humble pleat has become popularised. This season sees a modern take on the schoolgirl staple. Proenza Schouler’s show saw pleats-a-plenty, which were combined with an array of light-weight fabrics.

2/ Sheer

Sheer does not have to be shocking. This summer sees a softer take on the term. Light, transparent fabrics have been a permanent fix on the catwalk, where there has been an abundance of low-density, semi-transparent fabrics. Take note from Antipodium’s opulent sheaths of chiffon, or the milky translucence of J. W. Anderson’s collection.

3/Pastels

This winter’s trend for pastels is not going anywhere. The summer shows, however, have texturally transformed it. If it was associated with angora, fur and mohair, this summer it colours an array of chiffons, silks and finely spun knits. Mulberry, Carven and Dior showed a range of pinks, mints and duck-egg blues, whilst Burberry awed its spectators with its collection of intricate lace pastels.

4/ Art

This summer clothes have got conceptual. Take note from Louis Vuitton, whose show was opened by a seemingly naked Edie Campbell, wearing a nude body suit scrawled all over with black paint. Fashion shows have become progressively more experimental, and the catwalk itself has become a site of artistic exhibitionism. From Prada’s murals to Chanel’s art gallery display, modern art and bold colour were a huge theme across the SS14 shows.

5/ Metallic

Showcased on the catwalks of Tom Ford, this wintery trend has been given new life for the summer. Keep it simple and sophisticated and team it with flats on long, balmy nights. Don’t take from Gucci, who made sure their glittering gowns were loose and delicately draped.
