Blessed is ‘Fruit of thy Womb’ Upcoming TCD production examines the Catholic context of the 8th Amendment

Ireland’s rug is a death trap, there’s too much swept under it at this point because we have allowed too many injustices, too much misogyny, too much hurt to continue throughout our history without raising our collective voice against it. Creating political art with phenomenal, passionate, compassionate artists is one of the best ways do go about fighting that history and carving a brighter future for the women of our country. An Ireland where our freedom is not curtailed by the constitution, an Ireland where we feel safe on our streets and are equal in every way, and words like “I believe her,” “Me too,” and “Repeal the Eighth,” are mere relics of the past, no longer necessary.

In the grand tradition of political art, this Saturday, Trinity Printing House will be host to a radical new student production, Fruit of Thy Womb. Offering a critique of the Catholic Church’s role in creating theocracy in Ireland, this is grassroots, pro-choice theatre at its most immediate and feminist. Where consitution meets catechism, you’ll find this play.

Cast member Gráinne Holmes Blumenthal (a TCD Drama and Theatre Studies graduate) says, “I got involved in this project because I wanted an outlet that allowed me to openly express my thoughts and feelings of being a woman, focusing on the taboo and unspoken, and to be in a room of open minded and nonjudgemental performers really excited me. Because I knew the discussions would become intense, and as a result it would hopefully bring me closer to finding an answer to a question I didn’t know I had.”

This production is a devised piece, coordinated by Tim Leech-Cleary, dramaturged by Saoirse Anton, and devised by Ciara Manning, Bríd Nolan, Ollie Bell, Gráinne Holmes Blumenthal, and Ceara Daly Cearney.

“Hopefully on performance day we’ll get to engage with those who oppose the 8th amendment being changed, or are undecided and open up a conversation with them,” Ceara Daly Cearney, cast member, notes.

No ticket or fee, just bring an umbrella in case it rains.
