Things I’ll Never Say – Gadget and the Cloud // Review Late night feelings and striving for hopeful mornings, Things I’ll Never Say Out Loud ventures into mindful experimental electronic

Resounding cyclical emotions and overwhelming feelings can sometimes be indescribable. This is where ambient electronic music can express what cannot be put into words. Gadget and the Cloud’s latest EP Things I’ll Never Say explores the periods of aimlessness and lack of purpose that we all experience. The EP ventures into experimental and atmospheric territory, delivering a spectrum of superb songs. From buoyant to foreboding, the four tracks present a journey through mental landscapes, ultimately arriving at a place of tranquility and hope.

Carefully crafted and balanced, ‘Quiescence’ builds beautifully into a vast sonic landscape filled with opportunities. The lo-fi layered drums compliment the rising, flowing synths. Bass seeps into the track along with echoing melodies to deliver an emotional, subdued climax.

‘Keep You’ is haunted by the lyric ‘what you gave you can never get back’, pushing its way into the soundscape like an intrusive thought. Spacey, twinkling pops of melody come together with solid, driven drums, powerfully propelling the track. The sense of building isn’t impending but is more determined in its direction, ready to take a new path. This single was released last year and spookily fits into the 2020 era of quarantine – a time of mental struggles, uncertainty, but also resounding hope that we will return to normalcy at the end of this.

Middle of the night questioning, those dark hours where hope wavers, reveals itself in ‘Ten Past Three’. Electronic disturbances, ghostly heavy synths and disjointed percussion come together with conflicting beats epitomising those moments of aimlessness. The track veers into the experimental and chaotic but never becomes too cluttered. It dances on the boundaries of derangement and frenzy, grappling with the inner and outer darkness of those midnight hours. PressShots3.jpg

The sun rises again in ‘It Never Felt Right’, ending the EP on a serene note. The dawn has come, the birds are singing, the muted piano offers comfort after a long night. The gentle, reflective soundscape, soft in it’s melody, reminds us that we will have moments of newfound peace and these  are to be treasured. A gorgeous ambient track with drifting synthesizers, ‘It Never Felt Right’ shines on this EP, solidifying Gadget and the Cloud as an emerging artisan of electronic music.

Gadget and the Cloud deals with the dark in a dramatic way, tracing  difficulties as well as leading us to the hope of a new day, a new beginning, a destiny not known before. These soundscapes put music to emotions which are too strong for words, showing the lows for what they are and revealing the hope that comes when they pass.
