Videodrome: Britney Spears, Toxic

Before 2004, Britney Spears’ videos showcased either a wide-eyed girl-next-door, or a sultry, in your face temptress trying to escape those bubblegum roots. Toxic marked the glorious moment when Britney realised that she could play both those roles: naughty and nice. Conceptualised by Spears herself, the video sees the singer go from a coy air hostess whose entire act is laced with innuendo (oops, she spilt champagne over that guy’s crotch), to a blackhaired killer who titillatingly pours poison into the mouth of her cheating boyfriend. And this is without mentioning her brief transformation into a redhead, cruising around a futuristic Paris to steal a poison vial from Toxic Industries (we see what you did there), accidentally setting off the security lasers and thus having to perform some incredibly intricate dance moves to escape. Perhaps the most iconic part of the video remains the intermittent cuts to Britney naked, covered in diamonds. Indeed, that particular sparkling scene combined with the homicide plot meant that MTV moved the video to its late-night programming. Still voted amongst the sexiest, best music videos of the 2000s, Toxic is when Britney was firmly anointed with her now-eternal crown of pop princess.
