Smokin’ Bones – review

●●●●○

The BBQ smell that greets you when you walk into Smokin’ Bones on Dame Street is almost as good as their student lunch deal. For €6.50, you can choose a “meat in a bun” from their four meaty sandwich options, along with a side, including mac n’ cheese, onion rings and coleslaw. We sat at one of the comfy benches that line the wall of the deep restaurant, beside the exposed kitchen. It was a tough choice between the sandwich options, but I opted for the chicken with a side of fries, while my partner chose the pulled pork and a side salad. While the restaurant advertises its “low and slow” cooking the food arrived very quickly, making it a viable option for a quick lunch between classes. Our buns were served on a wooden boards while the sides came in pretty white and blue crockery. Both our sandwiches were moist, meaty and delicious. While I’m personally not a fan of kitchen roll on the table instead of a napkin, it certainly came in useful considering the generous amount of sweet tender meat in the soft white buns. While the portions were sufficient, we went for dessert in the interest of research. The Oreo cream pie was made up of a biscuit base with a creamy mousse topping, and at €3.50, totalled the two course lunch at a very reasonable €10. A dense chewy brownie with Bourbon cream, €4.00, was the day’s special, and twice the size you would expect. Given its proximity to college, along with the quality of food and service at such reasonable value, it’s a perfect new spot for lunch.
