Playlist: October 2014

Cold, golden sunshine, increasing bouts of rain, and a slow dusting of orange leaves coating the ground: October has arrived. Starting off with the sweet hip-hop production of Ras G, our playlist moves through some of tn2’s favourite recent releases. There are, of course, tracks from some of the biggest albums of the past month (namely Flying Lotus and Caribou), as well as some of our favourite sparkly pop tunes of the moment — Charli XCX and Tinashe have made a couple of gems. There’s a smattering of warm brass and hip-hop sounds from Nehruviandoom, the exciting collaboration from hot young rapper Bishop Nehru and DOOM, plus some slightly jauntier R&B-infused vibes from Rome Fortune and man of the moment ILoveMakonnen. This is without mentioning the cartoony fun of Kid Ink’s Body Language (featuring Usher! What’s not to love?). There’s some soaring 80s pop in the form of a collaboration between Swedes Niki & the Dove and Kleerup, dreamy surf-pop from Alvvays and a manic, twangy number from Girlpool. Grime gets a nod too, with the original version of Skepta’s That’s Not Me — the US version with Wiki that everyone is going mad for is annoyingly not yet available on Spotify. We finish on a song from the Killing Season EP, as a mark of respect for the recently deceased Spaceape — the man whose deep, distinctive, unapologetic voice has surely been one of the hallmarks of UK dubstep. There is a soulful warmth that ties all these songs together with a fuzzy, underlying sense of propulsion. Enjoy listening to these autumnal grooves:
