Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, based on reclusive author Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel, will open at the New York Film Festival this October. Reuniting Anderson with The Master (2012) star Joaquin Phoenix, the 70s set film centres around a private detective’s search for his ex-girlfriend’s missing boyfriend. Already generating Oscar buzz and previously expected to premiere at Cannes or Venice,  the decision to showcase such a high-profile release at the relatively low-key NY festival has generated speculation that awards contenders will be jumping ship from the major players after Toronto’s controversial new rule. In any case, we’re very excited to see PTA’s latest, which is due to be released in Ireland next January.

Leaks, hoaxes and broken ankles — J.J. “Lens flare” Abrams’s Star Wars set has been troubled. Film blog Badass Digest have now claimed to have unearthed the details of the film’s closely guarded plot. (Possible spoilers) If their information is to be believed, the original trilogy’s cast will take a back seat to unknowns John Boyega and Daisy Ridley who embark on a search for Luke Skywalker after discovering his lightsaber (complete with severed arm) on a desert planet. No-one involved in the project, which is currently on hiatus, has responded to the claims. If the leak is genuine, let’s hope that the negative reaction from the notoriously devoted fan community will prompt some strategic re-writes!

Beyoncé’s teasing instagram post got us all worked up earlier this week and now the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer has finally arrived. It’s all pretty tame until the last few seconds when we get a glimpse behind Mr Grey’s sexy door of sadism. What’s still unanswered is how explicit the film will be, although the lack of big name stars suggests this won’t be your average “keep your bra on during sex” affair. The woman behind the camera is Sam Taylor-Johnson, known primarily as a visual artist and for her debut feature, John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy. She’s no stranger to sexual controversy — her relationship with husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson raised a few eyebrows when she began seeing the then-19 year old back in 2009. Let’s be honest — if Taylor-Johnson can focus a camera, the adaption will most likely be an improvement on E.L James’ infamously lumpen prose. Fifty Shades will be hitting cinemas on Valentine’s Day 2015.
