Harty’s TV Highlights: Christmas Day

Trinity Life editor Una Harty gives us the what’s what on what to watch this Christmas Day.

You’ve fought over the game of Monopoly, stuffed your face with all of the trimmings and had one too many Baileys over ice. Now, it’s time for the important stuff. Here’s how to drown yourself in crap television this Yuletide season.

  1. The Great Christmas Bake-Off / BBC 1 / 4:45pm

2016 was truly a year of loss. This Christmas, let us not forget the fall of our small screen soldier, GBBO. This festive special gathers together all of our favourite former contestants, pitting them against each other in an attempt to bake up a storm. Revel in one last stint of Mel and Sue jesting about soggy bottoms and moist sponges before Paul Hollywood elopes with the tent to Channel 4.

  1. Mrs Brown’s Boys / RTÉ 1 / 10:25pm

Brendan O’Carroll, creator of the iconic comedy series Mrs Brown’s Boys, hit the right note when the first Christmas special aired in 2011. Christmas is the ideal platform for this quintessential Irish sitcom. Since then, the Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special has been going from strength to strength. This year’s special is much anticipated once more.

  1. The Snowman / Channel 4 / 11:50

This heartwarming tale of a newly formed friendship between a boy and a snowman is magical. Based upon the children’s picture book of the same name, The Snowman has rightfully earned the third spot on the Channel 4 ‘100 Greatest Christmas Moments’ listicle. Catch the sequel, ‘The Snowman and the Snowdog’ at 4:55pm later in the day.

  1. Hup na Nollag / TG4 / 8:50pm

Tap into your traditional Irish roots with this festival jamboree. Tommy Fleming, Danú and many more performances shall be joining us from Sligo to sing our way through Christmas Day.

  1. Ireland’s Crazy Christmas Lights / TV3 / 12:30pm

In true TV3 style, our list ends by throwing away all the artistic integrity we might have accumulated by mentioning The Snowman and Hup na Nollag. Switch over to the dark side for that trivial tabloid goodness; the wackiest Christmas light displays in Ireland. This is gonna be lit.

Vegetate and be merry.
Feliz Navidad from all of our Tn2 staff and writers and the team at Trinity News.
