This gathering of local Dublin bands was an act of defiance against the alleged misconduct that led to the cancellation of Brand New’s Olympia gig. The lead singer of the American rock band, Jesse Lacey, was recently accused of sexual misconduct, leading to the postponing and eventual cancellation of Brand New’s farewell UK tour, including the Dublin date.

Girlfriend, a band from North Dublin, decided to organise an alternative gig with all donations going to the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. Playing the small stage of Drop Dead Twice on Francis Street, there was a fantastic turn out for the show.

The venue was deemed a safe space from the beginning and Regret Will Come was the first act to take to the stage.  He set the tone with a mix of rock and alternative vibes. With the crowd growing more and more as the first set was played, an incredible atmosphere began to build.

Regret Will Come left those attending in good spirits for the second band, Natures. Walking on to some Emo favourites from our secondary school years, they gave a great performance and worked incredibly well as a quartet. Their electric guitars ripped through Drop Dead Twice with a viciousness that had everyone cheering them on by the time they played their last song.

Following Natures was Over Being Under who took the rock theme to the next level. They filled the tiny stage with bold and explosive riffs that made the crowd head-bang for the majority of their set. They delivered a mighty performance and reflected the talent that all of the bands of the evening were bringing to the local venues of Dublin.

After much anticipation, Girlfriend came onstage. They opened their set by thanking everyone for coming to the gig, sentiments that were echoed by the supporting groups. Extremely passionate and bursting with energy, Girlfriend delivered everything and more for the crowd who were overwhelmingly supportive of them and their powerful endeavour. Not only did they give an amazing performance, they also showed that music is a medium that everyone should enjoy and attending a gig should be an enjoyable experience where everyone is respected.

Everyone who attended understood the importance of the turnout for this alternative gig. As more and more famous names become associated with sexual misconduct and assault, it has become more important than ever to associate our favourite pastimes, like music, with friendly faces, fighting against those who have taken advantage of people in the varying industries. In total, the gig raised €895 for DRCC.
